Final May Posting
27/May/2011 10:37 PM Filed in: Latest Cut stones
I wanted to get one more stone posted before the end of the month. I started cutting this one last night, and just finished up tonight. This is a Spinel from Mahenge Morogoro Tanzania. The cut is my juiced up round design with 2 extra tiers of facets. This makes for a very bright stone without extinction. The stone is 5.96 mm, so 6 mm for all practical purposes, and a very easy size to find a mounting for. Don't forget to sign up for the RSS feed. It's on the right hand column of this page. This way you will be notified whenever I post new stones. I always post the new stones here on the blog, with links back to the page where the details are. Just click on the images to go to that page.

Concave

I had not cut a concave stone in several months, and had been thinking about doing one on this Lindi Garnet rough I bought in Tucson this year. I bought 2 stones, the two largest stones available. These are a rare garnet from Lindi Tanzania, that is a mix of spessartite and pyrope garnet, with a refractive index of 1.78 it has more spessartite than pyrope. The stones are seldom found large enough to cut 1 ct stones that are clean, and this one is loupe clean and 3.33 cts. The concave cutting really brings out the color in this.

I got on a little sapphire roll, as I was looking though the rough for something else. This first one is a pretty pink with lavender, and the next a blue from Madagascar. Both are untreated or heated.
