Three new stones this weekend.
This first one is something you don't see too often. These are called Umba Garnets, since they are found in the Umba region of Tanzania. Kind of an odd garnet, when they are rough they look quite different than cut. Cut they are very red with a slight orange tint. The refractive index on this one is 1.745 which would suggest a pyrope almandine mix or a pyrope spessartine mix since the spectra looks quit similar to a spessartine garnet. This one is a large stone weighing over 8 cts.
Next up is a purple spinel from Tanzania
and a concave cut light pink tourmaline from Nigeria.
