Precision Gem

Gem 1262 - Imperial Garnet - 2.00 ct. This garnet is from the Lindi region of Tanzania. Many classify these Imperial garnets as Malaya, however they have more of a pink color and in the rough always formed with a glassy skin to them, unlike other malaya garnet. The refractive index of the stone is 1.756 which does place it on the lower end for malaya. The stone has some very slight silk that can only be seen with a loupe. Measures 7.028 mm, cut in my classic cushion shape.

Gem 1258 - Malaya Garnet - 3.32 ct. This stone is from Kenya and is a nice color Malaya. It's a peach flesh color with a hint of pink, no orange. The cut is an emerald type profile, but not a step cut, that measures 10.57 x 7.92 mm. There are some very fine needles in the stone, but not many, that can not be seen with the naked eye.

Gem 1253 - Malaya Garnet - 2.26 ct. This malaya garnet is more on the orange side. The stone is cut in my Star 80 design and measures 7.687 mm. The origin of the stone is Tanzania.

Gem 1221 - Spessartite Garnet - 2.50 ct. Here's a 8 mm round spessartite from Loliondo Tanzania. As with all these, there are some bubbles and inclusions, but the bright color more than makes up. One darker inclusion in the table that is eye visible.

Gem 1183 - Malaya Garnet - 6.54 ct. This is a large round Malaya Garnet from Kenya. About 2 years ago there was a new find of these Malaya garnets in which the color is more of an orange that some of the light peach Malaya's. A larger round stone like this is quite rare. The stone measures 10 mm. There is one inclusion near the girdle right at about 2:00 in this picture, other than that, the stone is totally clean. A prong would totally cover it once set.

Gem 967 - Yellow Grossularite Garnet - 13.04 ct. I bought this stone about a year ago, and had very high expectations for it. It was large, well shaped, nice color, but had a very granular outside, so it was tough to see in it. I paid $1200 for the stone. Well, it turns out, it's not that clean, has some bubbles, and the crystal is not glassy. It's an interesting stone, nice size, and I'm taking a bath on it. Measures 14 mm.

Gem 964 - Malaya Garnet - 1.93 ct. This one is a more orange malaya from Tanzania. It's cut in an 8 sided design with a swirl effect in the faceting, much like a pinwheel. The stone measures 7.20 across the flats, and 7.77 from point to point. As with the other Malaya garnets, this one is from Tanzania.

Gem 624 - Malaya Garnet - 1.9 ct. This Malaya is more on the orange side, and is cut with concave facets on the pavilion. Everything is cut in a swirl fashion. Measures 7.5 mm.
